Alison, Alto - Member since 2019

I'm 29 and an artist and work at the Royal College of Art in Kensington, and teach drawing in my spare time.

I joined the WFCC's alto section in September 2019, after walking past the door for years on my way home from work. I used to hear the singing and when I found out it was a Community Choir I was so excited to join! 

I arrived for my first rehearsal very early, and stood quietly outside the door trying to work out if the other people around were 'choiry' people. Everyone was very kind and welcoming, and as soon as we stood up and Jamie got us doing a range of silly warm-ups I felt right at home! 

What encouraged you to join Waltham Forest Community Choir?

I used to sing in a big classical choir when I was at school and loved it. One of the best things about WFCC is the repertoire - it's the perfect mix of beautiful classical choral music and more contemporary pieces. Challenging at times but also lots of fun!

What changes have you seen since you joined?

I haven't been around for long, but the biggest change has been our sudden transition into socially distant rehearsals online in the wake of the global pandemic. I was quite uncertain about how it would work, but after two months I've been so impressed! We've learned a song together and I've become much more confident in my own singing voice (it's the only one I can hear at the moment!). 

By far my favourite experience so far has been singing Matthew Herbert's "Beethoven NEIN!" in Barbican Hall, with the s t a r g a z e ensemble. It was such an honour to be a part of such an exciting new project, and on my favourite stage in all of London! Recording my Dad singing as part of the piece was a lovely touch as well - he had such a good time!

I feel so much more connected to my local community now I am part of WFCC. It's difficult working in London as you so rarely work where you live, so an opportunity like this to meet local people is so fantastic. I always feel happy after a rehearsal too!
